Elvis Presley’s ‘In The Ghetto’ is one of my favourite songs of all time. It makes me feel something that very few songs, films and books do; but when it does happen, it overwhelms me, and I remember exactly why I want to make a positive difference in this world some day. If you’ve never heard the song, I urge you to download it, or go on YouTube or whatever the kids are doing these days, because if you have any musical knowledge/taste at all, coupled with a working soul - then your mind will be blown.
Songs hardly ever make me cry, but believe me when I say that the lyrics, along with Elvis’ emotive manner of crooning them into my headphones, has definitely brought a tear to my eye more than once. I just find it so heartbreaking that every single day people live their lives in poverty, with no opportunities at all, no chance of doing something better and no education to allow them to understand the consequences of their actions, nothing. Worse still, that this lifestyle is not a choice. I know way too many kids, sons of rich fucks who would give them everything in the world if only they were to ask, leading the ‘gang’ lifestyle just because they’re too fundamentally apathetic and stupid to consider what’s lying at their feet… But the kid in this song, he doesn’t have that fucking choice. He doesn’t have a backup plan, he doesn’t have a chance in the world and it just pisses me off that people who have everything don’t care.
As usual, that turned into a rant. Point is, top notch song, listen & love.
